How does a hybrid car work? | Baton Rouge, LA

August 29th, 2022 by

With more and more vehicles becoming hybrids and the price of gas remaining high, a lot of people are turning to these newer types of engines. But how do they work? Let Price LeBlanc Toyota help you understand!

Put simply, a hybrid combines a gasoline engine with at least one electric motor to move the car, and its system recaptures energy through regenerative braking. Sometimes the electric motor does all the work, sometimes just the electric motor, and sometimes both work together. The result is better gas mileage and sometimes better performance.

In all hybrids, electricity comes from a high-voltage battery pack that’s charged by the gasoline engine or regenerative braking.

In plug-in hybrids, the battery pack is significantly larger and best charged through an external charger. It still has a gasoline engine for extended range, but otherwise acts like a fully electric vehicle.
