Synthetic or Conventional Oil | Baton Rouge, LA
When you’re preparing for an oil change, a common question to ask is whether conventional or synthetic oil makes a difference in your vehicle, and which do you need?
Conventional Oil
- The base oil is 100% mineral oil produced from refining crude oil, but without major changes in its molecular structure
- Works in all cars (unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer)
- Breaks down quickest and needs replaced sooner
- Has less heat resistance than synthetic oil
Synthetic Oil
- The base oil is more heavily refined from crude oil to produce (or synthesize) new base oil components
- Works in all cars, and is sometimes recommended or required for some
- Has more heat resistance and better low temperature performance
- Can be made at a lower viscosity, giving better engine performance
- Breaks down less quickly
There are also semi-synthetic oils which are made by combining conventional and synthetic oils, but their performance depends on the mix between the two.
